The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(excerpt)

Presently a vagrant poodle dog came idling alongsad at heartlazy with the summer softness and the quietweary of captivitysighing for change.He spied the beetlethe drooping tail lifted and wagged.He surveyed the prisonerwalked around itsmelt at it from a safe distancewalked around it againgrew bolderand took a closer smellthen lifted his lip and made a gingerly snatch at itjust missing itmade anotherand anotherbegan to enjoy the diversionsubsided to his stomach with the beetle between his pawsand continued his experimentsgrew weary at lastand then indifferent and absent­minded.His head noddedand little by little his chin descended and touched the enemywho seized it.There was a sharp yelpa flirt of the poodle's headand the beetle fell a couple of yards awayand lit on its back once more.The neighboring spectators shook with a gentle inward joyseveral faces went behind fans and handkerchiefsand Tom was entirely happy.The dog looked foolishand probably felt sobut there was resentment in his hearttooand a craving for revenge.So he went to the beetle and began a wary attack on it againjumping at it from every point of a circlelighting with his fore­paws within an inch of the creaturemaking even closer snatches at it with his teethand jerking his head till his ears flapped again.But he grew tired once moreafter a whiletried to amuse himself with a fly but found no relieffollowed an ant aroundwith his nose close to the floorand quickly wearied of thatyawnedsighedforgot the beetle entirelyand sat down on it.Then there was a wild yelp of agony and the poodle went sailing up the aislethe yelps continuedand so did the doghe crossed the house in front of the altarhe flew down the other aislehe crossed before the doorshe clamored up the home­stretchhis anguish grew with his progresstill presently he was but a woolly comet moving in its orbit with the gleam and the speed of light.At last the frantic sufferer sheered from its courseand sprang into its master's laphe flung it out of the windowand the voice of distress quickly thinned away and died in the distance.
